A microdiscectomy is the same procedure as a laminotomy but performed using an operating microscope or endoscope through very small incisions. The surgery can be safely performed under local or spinal anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. It is one of the “gold standard” operations performed with very good to excellent outcomes.
The goal of the surgery is to safely remove herniated discs that are extruded or sequestered (out of the disc space) and causing significant pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves.
