Major spine reconstruction surgery is a further extension of the instrumented spine fusion operation. It usually involves more than one level of the spine and also adds correction of a significant deformity or treatment of a severe spine fracture or tumor.
Sometimes entire vertebrae are removed and replaced with artificial devices to “replace” the diseased segment. Revision spine surgery would also be included in this category. There are only a limited number of qualified spine surgeons to perform these operations due to the complexity of the conditions and the extensive experience required to safely and effectively treat these types of problems.
