Transforaminal Epidural
The transforaminal epidural injection is again similar to the standard epidural but differs in that access to the epidural space is gained through the foraminal canal. There is foramen on the right and the left side at every spinal level from the neck to the sacrum. The foraminal canal is the space formed by the vertebrae above and below where an individual spinal nerve exits the spinal canal.
This approach, although more difficult, allows for a more accurate placement of the needle and medication into an area that otherwise may be difficult or impossible to enter, especially if previous surgery has been performed and severe scar tissue is present. The procedure must be done using television x-ray and special long needles to gain access to the proper area to be treated.
Transforaminal Epidural can treat the following conditions:
Herniated Intervertebral Disc
Spondylolisthesis
Facet Arthritis
Spinal Stenosis
