Physical Therapy

If other non-surgical treatments fail, often patients will be prescribed physical therapy by their treating physician or surgeon. Physical therapy uses most of the modalities described above but in a more concentrated and focused manner. Physical therapists are given directions by the referring physician but are often asked to also evaluate and treat patients as they feel is best. The frequency and duration of treatments are based on the severity of the problem and degree of disability.

There is typically no set routine and treatment programs are generally tailored to each patient. Modalities may include ice/heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, stretching and traction, pool therapy, exercise, aerobics, and massage to name a few. Following physical therapy, patients are encouraged to enter an independent exercise program to continue the rehabilitation process.

Physical Therapy can treat the following conditions:

Herniated Intervertebral Disc
Spondylolisthesis
