Radiculopathy

General Information

A nerve compression or a pinched nerve which causes nerve damage is termed as a radiculopathy.  The most common cause for a radiculopathy is a disc herniation in the neck or lower spine.

Radiculopathy Symptoms

Common symptoms of a radiculopathy include pain, numbness, and / or severe weakness.  It is best diagnosed by a clinical exam combined with EMG/ nerve conduction study.  The key factor for determining course of treatment is to identify if the radiculopathy is chronic or acute and if the injury is still occurring.  The findings of this information can be crucial in determining if surgery may be necessary to treat the related condition that is responsible for the radiculopathy.
