Sprains and Strains Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is it more difficult to treat a sprain/strain in the back?
When the muscles and associated structures in our back and neck are injured, the symptoms can vary from a mild discomfort to very severe and crippling pain depending on the nature and degree of the injury. If we injure a leg or arm, we can rest that extremity in a cast, brace, crutches, etc., until it is better. Often we continue to use our back while it is trying to heal. This slows the natural healing process significantly. The course and nature of treatment has to keep this into perspective and the patient needs to be an active participant in their care.
